- "Love has real effects on the brain as powerful as addictive drugs." ~ pg. 87
"Change Your Brain Change Your Life" is filled with fascinating case studies. Almost every patient discussed has had a SPECT scan which measures blood flow and activity levels in the brain. While psychologists and psychiatrists can diagnose a mental illness from symptoms alone, the SPECT scans give an advantage to doctors willing to take them seriously.
While reading this book I had many moments of enlightenment. There are also a lot of helpful discussions about medications to take for various illnesses. You can literally diagnose yourself or someone you are close to because of the lists of symptoms and behaviors. You don't need to get a SPECT scan in order to understand the underlying problems.
"Every cell in your body is affected by every thought you have. That is why when people get emotionally upset, they frequently develop physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches." ~ pg. 58
A tremendous amount of research went into writing this book and it is very well organized. By reading this book you will realize which part or parts of your brain are not functioning at an optimal level. There is an interesting section on head injuries and discussions about eating disorders, addictions, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADD and drug addiction.
Some of the remedies do include natural remedies like valerian. I thought the information on L-tryptophan to improve sleep was helpful. Daniel G. Amen also discusses how to hypnotize yourself and how to breathe correctly (the brain doesn't last very long without a good supply of oxygen). Once I was very stressed out and wasn't breathing correctly and I fainted. So the information on breathing correctly could be lifesaving on its own. I also found it interesting to read about which drugs were appropriate for certain mental illnesses. While not all drugs were discussed it gives you an idea of what to discuss with your doctor.
I'd recommend this book to all psychologists and psychiatrists because it covers such a wide range of topics on mental illness. I'd also recommend this to anyone who suspects they might have a mental illness or anyone who suffers from uncontrolled rage, suicidal thoughts, obsessive thinking, sleep problems, anxiety, chronic pain, drug addiction or alcoholism. This book won't solve your problems but it could lead you to an increased knowledge of what you are facing and what to do about it. Please consult with your doctor before following any of the advice on taking herbal remedies in this book. Some herbs should not be taken with prescription medication.

- How the brain works
- As a consultant, speaker, and trainer, I read books like this to learn more about how we learn and change in life. I found the SPECT scan technology fascinating and many of the stories interesting. However, from a business standpoint, I really found little that was useful. I was hoping to find tips that I could translate into ways to work with people who exhibit ADD or other issues as described, but this book didn't really provide that sort of information. However, I still give it 3 stars as it was informative and interesting to read.

- Understanding people's actions
- I think this book help me understand why people do what they do based on what's happening to their body, or what they have put into their body. It gave me the knowledge to have compassion whereas before I would not, and what can be done to start the healing process, if they are willing.
