Katharine Hepburn reprises her triumphant Broadway role as a spoiled heir on the verge of marrying a snoot...but not if her ex-hubby (Cary Grant) and smitten reporter (James Stewart) can help it!
Re-creating the role she originated in Philip Barry's wickedly witty Broadway play, Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord in this sparkling 1940 screen adaptation of The Philadelphia Story, one of the great romantic comedies from the golden age of MGM studios. Applying her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself, Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband (Cary Grant), arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid exposé. In an Oscar-winning role, James Stewart is the scandal reporter who falls for Tracy as her wedding day arrives, throwing her into a dizzying state of premarital jitters. Who will join Tracy at the altar? Snappy dialogue flows like sparkling wine under the sophisticated direction of George Cukor in this film that turned the tide of Hepburn's career from "box-office poison" to glamorous Hollywood star. — Jeff Shannon

- I ordered this DVD 3 weeks ago.It still has not appeared. I tracked it down to Philadelphia (no less) and it's still not here. At this rate I'll be as dead as it's fantastic cast! More reviews

- Love it, love it love it. It's rich -- class appraising class, 'C. K. Dexter Haven you have unsuspected depth!; funny, 'Thank thee.'; characters willing to change, 'I'll be yar, I promise to be yar!'. I can't add to 157 comments. If you are a Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart fan this movie should be in your film library. More reviews
- A story worth repeating, over and over and over and over...
- One of those movies you cannot help but wholeheartedly adore, `The Philadelphia Story' is filled to the brim with humor, drama, romance and a nice dollop of spunk that keeps it feeling fresh and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.
I'm telling you; I'm beginning to wonder why I ever disliked Katharine Hepburn in the first place.

- Still one of the best
- I never tire of watching this movie. So well cast and funny. I don't know who really is my favorite star, but it might have to be James Stewart in this one, although both Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are really good. A good supporting cast, also. More reviews
