Magnificent Box Set! Martinon Does A Brilliant Job!
Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel have a deep kinship and owe much to each other. Both men admired each other deeply. This kind of influence on each other is evident in their work. I'm not sure if the "impressionist" tag suits these two composers. Their style of composing is very textural, but I think the word impressionist fails to demonstrate what…   More reviews
Debussy / Ravel / Martinon / Magnificent
To heck with my "bipolar bear" rating system. That's just for my own use and, to be honest, I don't expect it to fully translate into Amazon's system of 1-5 stars. But, I do rate based on certain attributes of sound and performance. When it comes to performance on these 8 CD's there is not doubt that they all get an Amazon "5".

The only set you need
After owning dozens of Debussy, Ravel recordings, all I can say is ,
if you have this set, no need to look further.
My Ingelbrecht sets are good, but Martinon is better.
Forget the Munch and Monteaux, Bernstein's, Levine, Karajan (UUCCKKKK) etc etc.

Outstanding performances at any price
This boxed set provides a comprehensive collection of the orchestral works of both Debussy and Ravel. Jean Martinon conducts the Orchestre National de l'ORTF in the Debussy and the Orchestre de Paris in the Ravel pieces. The sound is stunning, and the performances are extraordinarily engaging. More Evocative than some of Mahler's Symphonies
I can't exactly visualise the oils of the French impressionists when hearing these pieces. But I do know what the other reviewer is talking about and the point is well made. They are so inspiring and evocative that they touch your heart strings perhaps deeper than most of Mahler's symphonies despite Mahler's gigantic orchetrations!
