West Side Story
![]() | Average Customer Rating: Recommend This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). - What A Score
- I gave my daughter this 2 disc edition for Christmas and now have gotten to see the extras that are included on the second disc. The movie itself looks great with what I think are improvements to the stage production (switching Cool and Gee Officer Krupke; Swapping America & Tonight; Adding the boys to America) but I wish they had not omitted the ballet sequence. Get the cast recording with Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert to hear how great the ballet sequence sounds.
This is a musical that deserves to be seen on a big screen (or at least a big screen tv with a killer sound system) to be appreciated for the wonderful score. Everything that could be said about the songs Bernstein and Sondheim wrote has been said so I can't add anything there. Forget the idea of Natalie Wood playing a Puerto Rican and enjoy a great movie. And see the stage production if it ever comes to your town. - 2007-03-30, 2 of 2 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- A Tragic Ending
- No land: The building projects impact urban living limited by the availability of land and open space. Theft: The Jets and Shark claim land or territories by force; either the Jets or the Sharks inherit the land; nor can they claim the territory through land rights acquired by a financial purchase; and the Jets and Sharks must steal the land by force. The two groups prevent free passage through the territory by escalating violence as a deterrant and barrier. Love: Tony falls in love with Maria; they dance together; and they dream of marriage. Maria (Romeo and Juliet tradegy) begs Tony to the intervene and stop the fighting between the Jets and Sharks. Maria's brother kills Tony's brother; Tony kills Maria's brother, and Chino kills Tony. Violence: The police can not stop the turf war. The officer humiliates the immigrant boys and racially distances himself from the Puerto Rican, Shark members; the Jets and Sharks agree to a fight between champions with barefists, but the battle escalates to knife fighting and three deathes. Association: The Jets and Sharks have the right to associate. Association is not evil. Aggression against another group is evil.

- A older movie, but excellent, a younger generation not that familiar with musicals, should check this out.The story remains current, the performers are great,a real love story, but also about" people" accepting other "people" which sadly remains today. A beautiful, exciting movie. One you'll enjoy over and over again.
