Well worth the wait
Well, as a fan of the first Half-Life, I was a little skeptical about Half-Life 2 living up to the origonal. We had to wait forever, but it is here, and it is definitely a Half-Life game.
Half-Life 2 is a high quality FPS with a cool single player campaign. Since this game truly is awesome, I'll leave it at that and focus on the minor annoyances you may find in the game.
Biggest annoyance:
Steam. Valve uses the steam program to validate your cd key, take up resources, advertise, take over the world, etc. I have no problem with registering my game, but this forced registration of my legit game had me a little annoyed. I was excited when the installation was finally coming to an end, but when i tried to validate my cd key, Steam said that the servers were unable to do it at that time. I had to wait like an hour. Trust me, that's not cool when you're all excited about the game you just bought and want to play it RIGHT NOW.
Other minor problems:
When walking, you get stuck on the props and sometimes have to load a saved game simply because you can't walk or jump away.
5.1 sound does not work on many sound cards. And if it does work, it can cause the game to "studder" quite often.
Lots of jumping from one platform to another. Is this Mario?
Very very linear. Holy cow, I feel like I'm in a rat maze. Good thing the graphics are beautiful enough to distract me.
In the sixth level, enemies keep spawning from nowhere. I like to be able to clear an area and have it stay clear so I can turn my back on it.
Those are my complaints about this game. To list every good thing about the game, however, I would need lots more space. This is a great game for what it is, and I am happy I bought it. The collectors edition DVD makes installing so much easier too. Plus you get a cool shirt and a crappy little Half-Life 2 book that you'll never open.
Buy it and save the world one more time, Dr. Feeman.

aaa scary!!!
half life and cs, what would fps' be like without you... i played this game at a pc cafe a long time ago and it still brings fond memories. this game has the best graphics out of all the games in 2005 and (even if i dont care,) the sound is good too. the game is actually arcadish cuz you know, youre fighting aleins with lasers, gravity guns etc, so fans of quake, ut2k4 and wolfenstein will LOVE this game. first off, the ai is top notch just like it's predessesor and so are the set pieces. it feels like youre an actor in a movie and the feeling is great. the atmosphere(also like the 1st one) is VERY SCARY. wanna tip? at about 12 at midnight, turn off all the lights, turn up the speakers and get close to the monitor. turn hl2 on and... well, ill let you experience that. (if youre under 17 and you try it out, your pants are gonna be so wet that the floor is gonna be stinky fr hte next 6 months) the gameplay is addictive and great. enough about hl2, i really wanna talk about cs:source. i got 2 words for ya. wickedly awsome. it is soooooooo addicting just like its daddy, cs. same as cs except only online and lan, there's mission objectives, theres2 sides, there are tons of weapons you can buy, andits realistic.another tip, go gather all your friends, go to the neareest cybercafe, and have a lan party on de_dust its an experience youll never forget. enough said. just get hl2 and register it. now.

Please Listen to this Advice.
For those of you who are unaware, Steam offers Half-Life 2 on sale through their web site. I decided not to purchase and download from Steam because I wanted the box, DVD and manual. The book that comes with it is totally worthless. It contains strategy on a few levels and a few pieces of artwork. I wouldn't be sad if I lost mine or threw it in the trash. The shirt is XL size only. I can't wear mine because it would hang below my knees. There is no manual, only a small piece of paper that shows the controls. What I'm trying to tell you is the Collector's Edition isn't anything special. The only thing worthwhile about it is the Half-Life Source. If you're looking to get something similar to the collector's edition, puchase the Silver Package off of Steams website. For the same price as the Collectors edition you can get the Silver package. Not only does this come with Half-Life Source, it also includes Day of Defeat Source, Counter-Strike Source, Counter-Strike Condition Zero, and Steam's entire catalog of Half-Life games. Trust me, the oversized t-shirt and worthless manual are not worth purchasing the collector's edition for.

Excellent Game.
First off the collector's package isn't anything special. As one reviewer mentioned not even a included manual! Instead they give you a simple mftr slip with the control scheme and Steam activation process. Read steam part thoroughly before anything else of course. Now the game is awesome. I reinstalled Windows XP and everything else just to be on the safe side being I was getting errors previously. Put in the DVD-ROM and I was off to installing HL2. Steam didn't take long and I was gaming within forty minutes. Steam installed the other included games as well. I've never played any previous HL variants and I must admit I'm itching to try HL Source1.
Great thing about DVD-ROM is none of the annoyance with swapping installing CD-ROMs otherwise DVD-ROM is not needed to game. Definitely want to clear out HDD space or defrag at least prior to installation. Game runs great and very DOOM 3 like scares/chills around every corner. The biggest nuisance for me are the getting STUCK BEHIND OBJECTS (Stairs, steps, ladders, flat objects/debrew inches off the ground!) often in the most critical moments. Thats a big bug it definitely ruins the moments that should be flawless.
Game progress is very good pace. Playing with all in game video settings set to *High, but the game still doesn't look as sharp as Far Cry or Doom 3 on my PC. Of course my PC is nothing special either. System specs: Gigabyte NForce2 GA-7N400 PRO2, Athlon XP 2600+ 2.079 GHz, 512MBx2 Geil Value PC3200 Dual Channel, ATi AIW 9600 XT, and Thermaltake 480W PSU. I'm happy with the video display I get, but definitely know I'm not getting the full experience. I guess HL2 auto-detect won't allow for Very-High settings if system can't run smoothly, because my game play is quite smooth even at HIGH settings with 2X AA. Definitely give this game a go, but make sure you have Internet connection first. Also I trully recommend at least a videocard upgrade to an ATi Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB (around $100 at NewEgg.com) or anything equivelent or better that fully supports DirectX 9.0b features. Being STEAM is a long-term uncertainty and unsure about reinstall process definitely make the first run the best. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. If the same price buy this DVD-ROM Collector's Eddition instead of CD-ROM variants. Otherwise turn the speakers high and become Gordon Freeman.
