- Easy starts, good power, good value.
- I was in the market for a gas trimmer as the cordless battery model I had was getting too weak for the jobs, dieing while only half-way completed and is a complete joke when dealing with thick wild growth. I looked at all the reviews and at first wanted a 4-cycle trimmer. However, I would suggest everyone go to a local store and hold these in your arms before making a decision. For me, what killed a 4-cycle option was how much heavier they were and because of the extra weight at the rear, made the unit very unbalanced and unwiedly to use. I decided instead to just stick with a 2cycle traditional model.
Another prerequisite was for the unit to have a quick-change attachment ability as I really loved the idea of having attachments for a pole saw, tiller, and wild growth wacking head. Of all the options, I found the Troy-bilt TB25 was on sale at the time for under $90 and so was a great price. While not the lightest or most balanced, it wasn't too far off competing models that didn't have the ability to use attachments. Definitely a world of difference from the 4-cycle models. It is no heavier than the cordless Ryobi I have.
I also purchased a 1.5 gallon gas can so I could fill it up to exactly 1 gal at the pump. I then mixed in the oil bottle which is calibrated exactly to a 1 gal mixture. For most small homes, this 1 gallon is going to last an entire year so it's a good idea to put some fuel stabilizer such as Sta-bil so the gas doesn't get mucky and you don't need to throw it away (I don't need to mention how much gas is these days!)
The manufacturer recommends 5 pulls on choke and a few on mid-choke to get the unit up and running. The first start took a little more than that but subsequent cold starts were within that range. The spring assist makes it easy to pull, totally unlike my previous experiences with a weedeater model which required Popeye arms to get going. The engine, while quite loud at full throttle, is actually pretty quiet at idle and low speeds. There's never any lack of power and the ability to modulate the power needs with the throttle is very precise. At idle, the clutch automatically disengages so you don't need to worry about the trimmer spinning on you while moving about.
I bought several attachments and they all go on very easily. I'm quite happy with my purchase and am glad with the decision I made. This is actually quite a step up from the weedeaters I used in the 90s, which is what made me switch to electric/battery powered units. But now I'm back to gas and not looking back! - 2008-05-10, 0 of 0 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Consumer Approved!
- This trimmer is easy to start. It is fairly light for a gas-powered trimmer. Loading the spool is no fun, though. Don't lose your instruction booklet. Works great on English Ivy.

- Hard to start and too heavy
- This trimmer is called "EZ Start". Whoever thought of calling it that has a sense of humor because this thing is terribly hard to start and becomes worse over time. I have cleaned it out, replaced the sparkplug numerous times, always use fresh fuel and it still gives me a workout trying to get it started. Once you get it started and it is warmed up, then it runs great, just trying to get to that point is really difficult. So, here I am, I bought this stupid thing to make trimming easier and faster, and I usually end up using the hand clippers because they're faster and less effort than trying to get this trimmer going. I thought Troy Bilt was a good name but now I am thinking otherwise. I looked at Hondas, but they're around three times as much, so maybe there's just not a gas trimmer that works available in my price range. Honda is the only small engine that I have luck with, so until I decide to pony up the extra money for a good quality gas trimmer, I guess I'm stuck doing the trimming by hand. I obviously don't recommend this trimmer.

- Double Line Junk!
- Those of you who have trouble feeding line out of your single line trimmer may be wondering if the double line is double the trouble. Actually, it's even worse than that. If you have any chain link fence you're trimming around, a double line is a nightmare!! The string wound around opposing spots on the same reel is 10 feet long. They expect you to unreel the whole thing and then wind it back in every time the string breaks - RIGHT!!The only thing that's nice about this thing is that the spring doesn't go flying out when you have to take the head apart(often!!!!!). If the string is not the same length on both ends, you'd think it would automatically cut it for you when you rev the motor. Instead, it wobbles because it is out of balance. YOU can trim it as necessary. I bought this because I got sick of the 2-cycle smell and because I wanted the advantage of switching to other tools on the same motor(I could not get a 4-cycle and/or the ability to switch between different tools in a trimmer that did NOT have a dual line head). Other than that, it is NOT what I had hoped for. The only reason I bought this at all is because of the string feeding problem with my 15 year old MacCullough. If you are in a similar situation and your old motor runs okay(which they usually do), do yourself a favor and get your old one fixed - maybe a new head. This thing also needs to have the rocker arm clearance set every 25 hours of running. Who the heck wants to mess with that kind of stuff? I've done mechanical maintenance all my life and don't see why/how an average owner would want/ be able to do this!

- unhappy camper
- This thing won't stay running long enough to get much yard work done. I bought Troy-Built as it had a good reputation. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth it to try to pack up such a large bulky item to return it, or to just " eat it "
