All around good improvements marred by inexplicable iMovie Downgrade
Of most of the products in the iLife suite there isn't much to say, because whether its iPhoto or GarageBand, the basic killer apps remain the same, but are also vastly improved from the '06 suite. The only application that this doesn't hold true for is iMovie '08, which is now rendered completely useless by several sideways "upgrades". The biggest one is the elimination of the timeline which makes actual video editing nearly impossible. There also dozens of other changes that make iMovie harder to use and less useful all the way around.
iMovie '08 seems to be mostly focused on extremely basic home video assembly and that's it. Whether intentionally or unintentionally Apple seems to be gutting iMovie in favor of steering people into stepping up into Final Cut Express.
Luckily, Apple seemed to realize that iMovie 08 was probably a terrible concept, and, unlike the rest of the iLife apps, iMovie HD 6 is kept in an Older iMovie file in your Apps folder after install. And there is really no reason not to keep using iMovie 6, or to open iMovie '08.
Otherwise, good upgrade and worth the value.

Sell iPhoto on its own please!
I got this product for one simple reason:
iPhoto08 - and I love it
- The concept of organizing photos in events is a big plus, it definitely make photos a lot more manageable. I love how it auto splits events when you import photos after 3 or 4 days of shooting. You can export you photos to Flickr using Flickr plugins. That is good, coz I don't want to be dependent on MAC gallery
- It integrates really well with Aperture and Pixelmator (image editing programs). BTW, the image editing that comes with iPhoto is good too, but I just happen to use Pixelmator a lot for some of its advanced features (eg layering)
iWeb - If you do not have MAC account, you are not going to use iWeb. I find concept of iWeb pretty silly when you have so may cheap hosting account with gazillion more templates available to you at fraction of cost.
Garageband - I don't use it, but I've seen my friend use it like pro, and looks like he is addicted to it. So I assume its really good.
iMovie and iDVD - I have used it way to less to actually comment, but I tried making couple of clips and they went pretty smooth. Intuitive to use for sure.
I hope they start packaging these software individually to buy.
(3 stars for making me buy stuff that I will never use)
(5 stars for making iPhoto)
(1 star for trying to make this product dependent a lot on Mac account - come on now Apple!)

Apple iLife '08
I bought this product primarily for the update to iPhoto, but I do use iWeb as well. I like both, they are well conceived and easy to use. So far, I have not used the other 3, but I had to buy them to get iPhoto.

iLife products even better
I've been a Mac owner and developer since 1985 and have experienced a lot of Apple software in those years. I've used the iLife suite for several years and iLife '08 is the best yet. Just about everything you could want and they're easy to learn and use.

making a good-looking photo album a breeze
I purchased iLife '08 and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to compose a photo album that allows you to drop your photos into previously arranged pages, as well as add copy (picture captions and commentary) to some of the pages. The results are truly professional. The software enables the user to select a background for the photos on a given page, as well as the number of pictures you want to appear on the pages. Printing fees for the finished album are reasonable. Send electronically your completed design to Apple, which will ship you a great-looking version of your photo album within a matter of days. You will be pleased to show the results (you can order more than one copy) to friends and relatives. Calendars and greeting cards also can be produced with the iLife software.
