Kelly Green

Average Customer Rating: Recommend

After I wrote Mahu, the character of Honolulu police detective Kimo Kanapa'aka stayed with me… and I found that there were many cases he could investigate that didn't take a novel to play out, and would also illuminate his coming out process. In “Kelly Green,” he is able to track down a gay man who has fled Honolulu, and help that man come to terms with his family—and catch some bad guys…

My favorite of the Kimo Amazon Shorts
As a homicide detective, Kimo needs to be observant. His life could depend on it. It's those little details that could mean the difference between life and death. For example, Kimo notices when he goes to a local QuickStop, to check out their surfing magazines, there's always a man there buying ice and wearing kelly green pants.
It's during one of those Saturday afternoons, when Kimo is approached by an older man wanting to buy Kimo a cup of coffee so they can talk about something. Kimo's not exactly on duty, but he agrees to talk to the stranger. The man needs Kimo's help in finding something, and naturally Kimo agrees to help.
Plakcy weaves in details of Kimo's personal life; along with the mystery giving us Kimo fans an enjoyable, interesting read. We see a warm, compassionate Kimo here as he interacts with the young GL teens where he teaches self-defense classes at the Teen Center. Kimo is truly a man that cares and that is something I find so appealing about the character. And it's because he cares so much that Kimo takes on a private case offered by the man Kimo had met earlier. The fee offered by the man is money needed for the Teen Center's GED program.
This short story was a little different from the normal kind of cases Kimo has to solve. The story twists and turns slightly (it's a short story so there is only so much room for plotting), and Kimo has a little adventurous holiday - mixing pleasure with business. Of the three Amazon shorts, this one was my favorite, because of the personal moments.
There are three Amazon Shorts featuring Kimo: "I Know What You Did," "The Price of Salt" and "Kelly Green."
