The Winslow Tunnel

Average Customer Rating: Recommend

The railway tunnel near Winslow, Arkansas, is real, as are many of the settings and some of the history in this story. Most of the rest—the railroad's name, the characters, a few of the towns, the train robbery—is imaginary. After all, I doubt that a vacation day in the mountains is the best way to find a hidden portal into the past. But who knows? Maybe there really are places in the world where magical…

John M. Floyd Has Done It Again With This Standout Tale
John M. Floyd has done it again with this standout tale. The story starts out with young Timothy Franklin's family traveling on their way back to Nashville from Amarillo. At the Arkansas welcome station, Timothy's father sees a brochure for "Great Railway Adventures". His great-grandfather was a conductor for the very train featured in the brochure, so he decides the family will take a little side trip. They arrive extra early at the train station the following morning to get front row tickets on the train. From there, the story is full steam ahead. This tale was particularly engaging for me, because it reminded me of my youth, when I would ride the scenic Rio Grande railroad with my father through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. I particularly remember the otherworldy feeling of traveling through the 6 mile long Moffat Tunnel. Pitch black and nothing but the sound of the train echoing off the walls. John M. Floyd's "Winslow Tunnel" will take you back in time. I heartily recommend this story. All aboard! 5 1/2 stars!

The Light at the End of the Tunnel
John Floyd writes the kind of stories that not only pique the reader's interest but also make him feel good. "The Winslow Tunnel" is no exception. Tim Franklin is a young boy who gets the unusual chance to warn his great great grandfather about a train robbery. What will the repercussions be? And can Tim really make a difference in this back-to-the-future kind of world? Floyd again keeps the reader rivetted in this fast-paced story.
