Years ago, I was assigned to cover a sort of mini-carnival for a small labor-union paper. While wandering about in the hundred-plus degree heat, I encountered a boy of perhaps ten who hadn't seen his parents in hours, and did not expect to see them for hours to come. They had given their young son a little money, long since spent, and told him to go away and leave them alone until dark. He was suffering from near-sunstroke, and severe sunburn. No one else seemed to care about the poor little guy, not even a security guard I tried to get involved. So I rehydrated him, there being little else I could do. Then he ran off to go play some more…and I went home to write ”Cotton Candy.“
