Belle has been scouting again and run into serious trouble. She steals a Union army horse and uniform and escapes, taking Turner Ashby vital intelligence about the Union cavalry unit that killed his brother. Ashby sets an ambush and slaughters them. He then orders Belle to not risk herself further in such missions but to stay and do her spying from the hotel, which is also a Union headquarters. Strother has been assigned to the staff of General Banks and there meets two more foreign officers recruited for the Union Army from Italy. They are Daniel Keily and Myles Keogh, late of the Papal Guard. Belle has difficulty returning to Front Royal and has to charm a Union Provost Marshal into giving her a pass. She and her mother are escorted to Front Royal by Hasbrouke Reeve, another Union Army officer. Belle finds him attractive, but then meets Dan Keily, who is immediately attracted to her. Realizing that he has an important job, she flirts with him. Keily tells Keogh that he finds Belle very attractive and intends to woo her.

- Supplying us with even greater insights into this bygone Civil War universe...
- ...Francis Hamit's Part Seven of THE SHENANDOAH SPY commences with a brief by sordid account of a violation committed against Belle Boyd. I say, it creeps up on the reader, with greater details as to the circumstances More reviews
