I was dancing with a gay friend at a community theater dinner dance when I noticed that not one gay man there was dancing with another. For fear of nasty remarks, he explained. I was writing In a Family Way, with a gay couple as viewpoint characters, and, when I next started writing, I imagined my couple breaking this taboo. The scene didn't fit in the novel, but I envisioned it as part of their back-story. I never showed it to my friend. But at the following year's dance he waltzed by in the arms of his boyfriend. Afterward he murmured, “A weight has been lifted off my shoulders.” And my scene, I realized, told a story complete in itself.
