Western stories don't have to be gunfights with swaggering macho men. The fact is that when you factor in electric lights and telephones—which came along in the 1880s—the west was pretty much like life today. People being people—good, bad, or more likely a mixture of the two, which is what most of us are. I try to do this in all my westerns. That's why sometimes I try to make them sad or funny, anything to escape the cliches of western fiction. And I'm not alone. Try Bill Crider, James Reasoner, Bob Randisi—among others—who use westerns in original and entertaining ways.
