Belle and Alice are dismayed to learn that not only has Clark been passed through the lines, but that he has written a scurrilous article about them, which accuses Belle of being “an accomplished prostitute”. - Clever dialogue rediscovers its 2nd wind in this dozenth part of THE SHENANDOAH SPY...
- Lookit, you're going to positively dig the dialectic between Stonewall Jackson and Ashby in this 12th section, folks.
It's a hum-dinger, Sir Francis Hamit at his vintage best.
Steinmauer (Stonewall) treats the newly minted Brigadier Ashby to a caustic dressing-down and kick in the posterior, to put the roiling vengeful Ashby back in his proper subordinate place. On the might of Ashby's fraternal rage, evoked often and menacingly on his late brother's memory, Ashby had (as you'd already read in previous sections, ergot I'm not giving anything new away, hehe!) placed the lives of many of the men under his command in dire danger. This, in addition to causing casualties galore.
Part 12 deals more with the intricate relationships between our many main dudes and dudettes. In fact, the dozen-th (I don't know if that's even a word, but I'm going to use it anyway!) segment is all about "character." Like a good Act II in a screenplay, where we zoom intently in on the intimate moments which form the lifeblood of our players. That's what you're going to find here. Check it out for yourself, please. Don't take my mad rantings at face value...
Things I fell head-over-heels with rapturously in this 12th little tango:
** love how Jackson always refers to "what the Lord hath supplied me with, I shall work into a sword of fury." Is this an authorial creative license, or was Jackson reputed to have said such things--especially during moments of greater tirade?
** the "bet you a fiver (Union or Confederate currency?)" scene between Srother and Brodhead was just brilliant. If you'd have scripted these lines for a photoplay (the better name for a screenplay, p.s., IMHO) I'd have chuckled, laughed, and giggled heapfully. T'was opportune, timely, and most innovative. I can't think of any other thrice-repeated adjectives, so I'm going to leave this and move onto the next point.
** Keily and our sweet lil' dingaling (Belle) had another of their rousing sex scenes. Love the descriptions (long phallus, deeper, stallion/mare, juices dripping from inside her)...if you'd have continued them for a little while longer, I'd have not taken responsibility for...well, let's just quit while we're ahead there, m'kay? I didn't like that Belle just got up after a restful--I'll say!--night's sleep to just sip coffee. If she'd have done that while in my bed, well, I dunno what I'd have done. Like I said, good thing to stop here quit while I'm ahead.
** another great line from the Hamit-orama: "...rather than grant us a civil divorce, you'd prefer to batter us into submission." This took all the edge off the "rebellious" nature of the so-called "Rebs," and added a much-needed boost of sympathy for the Southerners (I'd like to ask the author offline whether there's a grander plan afoot with such recapitulations? Could he kindly send me an electronic mail).
** TRIPLE-WORD SCORE ALERT!!! >>> loved the word "poltroon." Oho! Had to look it up, but it's an amazing one. I'm going to level it as an accusation against some of my not-so-close acquaintances, and hopefully when these ladyfriends slap me silly, the sting won't be too harsh and that inevitable red stain scross my cheek won't be left as "the gift that keeps on giving." Here's to hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
** Another Hamit 5-star metaphor: "Anxiety settled on her like a bad cold." Catch this stuff (like a bad cold?), ladies and gentlemen! Francis, do you remember writing this one?

Parts 13 and 14 are coming right up. Just two more to go and then it's all OVER.
Can it really be so? I've been with Belle for so long, that to lose place of it now wouldn't seem right. Is she still single?
Moving right along...
