- Disallusioned - Not what was hyped up
- Sangean is known for high-quality shortwave radios. I assumed this quality and the reviews would help me break into HD FM. I wish I had read the last review in this section before buying it. The only good thing about the unit is that it does give clear reception for HD stations whose normal signal is fraught with signal degredation.
When listening to quality FM (non-HD) signals that are crisp and carry excellent frequency response and separation, this unit renders it as almost monaural and AM quality. I couldn't believe it!
For FM stations (again non-HD) that are weaker, the unit further reduces separation and frequency response to give a quieter result. This is non-defeatable, so you're stuck with it. My boom box sounds better.
On another note, it offers many presets, but you can't surf through them. You must press a "Preset" button and then the number. If you are listening to the FM2 presets, you have to use the "Band" button to cycle through AM1 & AM2 to FM1 for those presets. Very clumsy!
The only good thing I liked is the simple faceplate for others that may want to use it.
In summary, I was going to Ebay my Onkyo FM tuner for this one. NO WAY! I am seriously considering returning this tuner.
Read our lips. Verrrry disappointing if you are a discriminating listener of music. There is a reason that the other HD receivers are expensive. Now I know. - 2007-04-27, 13 of 20 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Big disapointment
- Along with reception of new HD stations I expected high quality FM & AM to go with my complete top line stereo system. Instead, the HDT-1 gives me very poor quality, even less than a table-top clock radio. Very high output - can only turn amp up to lowest level - and painful to listen to. No response to inquiries from Sangean.

- Very capable tuner for a very low price
- If you're an anti-commercial radio type this tuner will probably not win you over. If however you don't like paying a monthly charge for satellite radio and you want something more than just standard AM/FM you might like this tuner. Many stations in the top 50 cities have stations transmitting HD signals. The quality of HD is most amazing on quiet passages in Classical music, there is no noise at all, very quiet. You do notice! The HDT-1 is quite sensitive. It will pull in stations that other tuners won't, and I'm not even talking about the HD2 streams that the stations are starting to feature.
Clear Channel for all the bashing people do of them is doing a great job with HD. Their stations sound good and most of the FM's are doing HD2, a few have some interesting formats not heard on most AM/FM stations. I hope the get even more adventurous.
My only disappointment is you need a strong signal to get HD to lock in on AM or FM. I don't believe that to be a fault of the tuner, it's the HD system and just like FM did I'm sure it will improve (ask someone over 50 about FM drift) . I give it 5 stars, it's not perfect but for the price it's very good and for a first generation product I don't think it could be better than this! - 2007-04-07, 7 of 8 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Love this product
- Sangean HDT-1 HD Radio Component Tuner
When my favorite radio station became only available in HD I bought this tuner and I love it. I can listen to my station when I go to sleep. I had to buy a better antenna because the one that came with the product was not strong enough but that was not a problem. - 2007-04-01, 1 of 2 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- I was disappointed with this tuner and wound up returning it.
- At first, I looked forward to having one of the few HD tuners out on the market. However, once I received the tuner, I was, sadly, disappointed.
I had a couple of problems with the product, one which made it unusable for my use and I returned the unit.
The first, fatal problem is that the power supply has a low frequency hum. I purchased the tuner for a home office, and will sometimes work without any music. I contacted the manufacturer hoping that it may have been a manufacturing problem, but they indicated that I should at least not hear the noise from "across the room". Even when the tuner is off, it draws power for its clock and continues to hum.
The other design issues that make the tuner slightly clunky:
1) Accessing any of the presets requires pressing a preset button before a number making every station 2 buttons away.
2) The width of the display causes most station/song titles to scroll, and to scroll slowly. The slowness may be based on the RDS signal, but I would have preferred to see the text all at once. - 2007-03-25, 11 of 15 people found this review helpful, Rated:
