Product Description

When I went to Berlin to research the background for The Good German, I found that the world of 1945 had seemingly vanished—bombed, reconstructed, buried under a modern city busily recreating itself yet again, its skyline a sea of building cranes (8000, according to one newspaper). To locate the settings for my novel, I had to practice a form of literary archaeology, digging beneath the new glass and steel to see the city below. Surprisingly, I discovered that 1945 was still all around me. The official buildings used by the Allied Occupation had not only survived the bombing but survive still. Even remnants of the Nazi era were there, if you knew where to look. “Finding the Berlin of The Good German” is an account of that research, an armchair travel guide to postwar Berlin, and an appreciation of a resilient city whose violent past, visible and invisible, is always close at hand.
