Contemplating Coulter Christianity

Average Customer Rating: Recommend

Until the publication of Godless, I had dismissed Ann Coulter as yet another publicity seeking pundit. Now that Coulter claims to be an authority on religion, she's stomping on my turf. Eve though taking her to task can be especially daunting in light of this judge that ye not be judged biz, as a religious satirist, I have an obligation to the faith to separate the sheep from the goats. Is Coulter trying to follow the Gospel teachings or this is yet another calculated effort…

My sentiments exactly!
I downloaded this little gem a couple of weeks ago. Like the author, I'd been having a lot of trouble with the vitriol put out by Ann Coulter. I enjoy reading Ms. Garrison's writings because she is a satirist, and for that matter, I have a strong satire-type streak myself, even though it doesn't show up on my book reviews.
I don't remember when I first heard of Ann Coulter, but like Ms. Garrison, I didn't pay much attention to her at first. But also, like Ms. Garrison, I came to a big parting of the ways with Ann Coulter with the publication of GODLESS: THE CHURCH OF LIBERALISM.
I am in agreement with Becky Garrison in her critique of Ann Coulter's lack of love and her penchant for using terms like "lunacy, loser, pathetic," etc. As a lifelong Christian, I about swallow my tonsils in shock, disgust and heartsickness when I hear supposedly Christian people saying that we should assasinate leaders of other countries and convert the citizens of the country to Christianity. Even a cursory reading of the gospels will show that Jesus never organized an assasination team to wipe out Herod, Pontious Pilate or any other Roman officials in Palestine at that time. A check of His 12 closest disciples will reveal, among other things, a Zealot, who wanted to oust Roman rule and a tax collector who worked for the Romans! Christianity was never intended to be communicated at the point of a gun.
Ms. Garrison gives some good insights in this brief, pointed and resonably-priced Amazon short. She states that as Christians, we need to build up the Christian community instead of "throwing rotten apples" at the so-called enemies. She calls for intelligent and civil dialogue between the scientific and religious communities about the origin of the universe rather than attacking each other. And most importantly, Becky also suggests reading C. S. Lewis' book MERE CHRISTIANITY. This is a worthwhile book for Christians and non-Christians alike to read.
I enjoyed reading this because I'm tired of the garbage that is being communicated in the name of Christianity. Ms. Garrison has stated her case well. I would add one more thing: all of us, Christian or not, need to be well informed about what a religion actually teaches, and not take at face value the rantings of people like Ann Coulter.
Thank you, Becky, for a well-written item.
