When I was studying for my degree, we touched on Valla and the Constantine Donation. I was intrigued as to why a man who almost blew the Catholic Church apart was able to go on and work at the Vatican. Then an editor friend was talking about the ideas he'd had but never got around to doing, and offered them up to a group of writers, including one idea about an'unholy alliance' between the Vatican and the Mafia. That gave me the basis for Valla's Secret and an explanation as to Valla's tenure at the Vatican.

A DELIGHTFUL READ.: As a student of Theology and Church history, I was intrigued by Ms. Quilford's story on this controversy regarding the "Constantine Donation."
It is clear that Ms. Quilford has a great grasp of the background and history of that particular period, and was able to take the reader through a very lucid tale set in todays Rome.

A novel story: I fully agree that this short story could be expanded into a novel. The 35 pages went by quickly and at the end I wanted more. Let's Twist Again...: Quilford manages to turn a long story into a quick read by never standing still and by throwing in as many twists as one story can reasonably hold. The main characters are uniquely flawed, making them enjoyable to "meet"--if only on the printed page. Valla's Secret could easily be expanded into a full-length novel.
