Bruce Willi stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). But as Mclane waits for his wife's office party to break up, terrorist take control of the building. While the terrorist leader, Hans gruber (Alexander Godunov) round up hostages, McClane slips away unnoticed. Armed with only a service revolver and his cunning, McClane launches his own one-man war. A crackling thriller from beginning to end, Die Hard explodes with heart-stopping suspense.
This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank), and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet, and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan. — Tom Keogh

- Best of the Series. Period.
- The original Die Hard is a classic film that is required viewing for action junkies. The story follows John McClain, a NY police officer visiting his wife in California for the holidays. Their relationship is on the rocks and he is trying to smooth things over in time for Christmas. But his marital affairs turn out to be the least of his worries as he soon discovers More reviews
- Great movie, so-so Blu-Ray
- I don't feel that I need to say much about the movie -- many others have given excellent reviews. Suffice it to say that I love this movie and have watched it time and time again.
Where I'm disappointed is with the Blu-Ray release. This picture is nice and crisp, but the high-definition transfer seems substandard, with colors washed More reviews
- The First and the Best of the Die Hards!
- Undoubtedly the best of the 4 Die Hards and possibly the best action film ever made! It is definately my favorite action film. John McClaine is visiting his estranged wife at her office, the new Nakatomi building in Los Angeles. The office is celebrating both Christmas and the opening of the new building. Suddenly the building is invaded by what appear to be some More reviews
- TERRIBLE BLU RAY TRANSFER!
- I am just reviewing the Blu Ray Disc. The quality is awful. Somehow I had to change the colours in my Sony LCD X series several times to watch the movie with some satisfaction. Mostly it reminded me of video transfer. There are some moments of grain, blur and to what I felt was audio drop.
Die Hard with a Vengeance faired much better which prompted More reviews
- An Action Packed Christmas Eve!!!
- This is a really awesome movie with great action, and great actors! Some terrorists have taken control of Nakatomi Plaza and only one man can stop them; John McClane! He's a loose cannon cop that doesn't play by the rules! Can John kill the bad guys, save his wife, and make it out alive to celebrate Christmas? More reviews
