Wherein Jill Everts's anxieties mount as she exchanges emails with the owner of the Brewster, New York gift shop from which 8-year-old Daisy stole a pair of rose-color glasses. But did she steal them…or was she meant to have them? Each hour brings new reason to worry about the Everts's move to Brewster next week. Jill is freaked enough to call Ken Huysman, who isn't just any ex-lover: he's a child psychologist who works for the government and has a passion for Daisy's singular mind. We let them have lunch alone but drop in on a Brewster lunch party hosted by pediatric ophthalmologist and botanist Henry Greenleaf and his wife Mattie, who teaches the gifted kids' class in Brewster. The lunch guests are the parents of the children Daisy named, without having met them, at the end of Chapter 1: April, Miguel, & David. (I'm scared. Are you?)
