- Sucks, sucks, sucks
- I've spent the last couple of days thinking about how to review this dreadful, dreadful software.
How about this: avoid at all costs. Even if somebody pays you to use this software, avoid at all costs.
Or this: On my Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz, 2.5Gb memory, with the Premiere binaries and the videos I'm working with separated onto 2 3.0Gb/s SATA hard drives, this thing takes minutes to start. The entire time, it thrashes. Try to load a video (say, a couple of minute video from my new Sony HDD camcorder), wait two minutes while it thrashes. Burn a DVD - a couple of minutes into each chapter, the video is corrupted and the DVD can no longer play it.
I don't often write reviews, and I've not often encountered software so bad that it's unusable. This is just such software.
Update: It just gets better and better. Tonight, while trying to burn to DVD a 10-minute movie using Premiere's default templates, I got a "Transcoding error" and the program locked up. - 2007-10-22, 29 of 36 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Waste of time and money as it does not work
- I bought it to handle HD video, I was OK to preconvert my AVCHD clips into something that Premiere Elements is ready to eat, although this full think just collapses then HD is anywhere near. At one point mouse pointer turns into hourglass and that's all. Wasting few hours I managed to import few clips into project, although I have never managed to do anything but most trivial tasks (render one clip to desired output). I have fairly decent computer (Dual Core Dell XPS 710 wiht 2 GB of RAM) but that does not help a lot.
Yet another piece of features which lack one very basic feature - it should be usable. I am not discussing some fancy UI usability tings but just basic assumptions that application should not crash or hang if you try to do anything that is mildly more complex than opening file and then closing it quickly. - 2007-10-20, 10 of 14 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Not recommended for Vista users and maybe XP too...
- I purchased this product with high hopes of making movies of my kids and other family members. My goal was to make simple movies using the advertised "fun" templates and so on. I have a Vista machine with an AMD FX processor and an 8800GTX video card, which should be more than enough horsepower to run the program. What I can say is this program does NOT work well with Vista or at lest my install. Other programs on my machine work fine but this program is terrible! It crashed on me over and over when trying to add an end title to an eight-minute movie. Then when I went to encode the movie (without the end title because I could not add it without the program crashing over and over), the encode took 20 minutes and then when I played the movie it was full of very loud static and white lines all over the movie. Basically it was worthless and I deleted it. I suppose it is possible that Adobe will come out with a patch to this software but at this point in time I do not recommend this product at all. Be warned.

- Youtube feature a failure
- I like the new interface and so far all the features that I want to use work. I'm using a Canon HV20 using HD with 24p and 4 is handling it just fine.
The huge negative is the youtube upload feature. It just plain doesn't work. I have tried three different videos from short to full 10 minutes over 8 different days (and times) and each time it errors out on me. I cannot get it to work. So now I just export the file and then use youtube's web interface and upload it without any problems.
So the "big" selling point to the new version just doesn't work. So if this is a big selling point for you...then stick with 3 and just export and upload like you have been doing... - 2007-10-17, 11 of 14 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- A Big Disappointment
- I purchased this product because I wanted to upload better quality videos to YouTube. The item description for this product states - "Broadcast far and wide by uploading your movies directly to YouTube or your personal sharing page. Adobe Premiere Elements 4 takes care of optimizing and formatting for the specific destination so your movies always look great." Unfortunately, that is completely untrue. The product's presets for YouTube result in a final video stream that is inferior in quality to most of the videos that are currently on YouTube. It is definitely inferior in quality to the MP4 files that I had been previously using. Therefore, it does not optimize for the specific destination. In addition, it does not allow you to adjust the YouTube presets so if you want to upload your file directly from Premiere Elements 4, there is no way to make any adjustments to improve the overall quality. On top of this, I am completely unable to directly upload any videos to YouTube, bad quality or not, since the program keeps giving me an error message that says "Online service encountered an error. The service will now be terminated. 10: unable to send HTTP request with GetLastError of 12002".
Over the past two days I have spent hours on the phone with their technical support staff trying to troubleshoot this connection error. After trying many many different configurations, the problem has not been solved and I can escalate the case to a higher level of tech. support. But of course, why should I bother wasting my time on all of this tech. support if even after the connection issue is fixed, it uploads such poor quality videos? The tech. support staff even agreed with me that the YouTube preset is not of the highest quality or what it should be. Since they are unable to answer alot of my questions, they have referred me to filing a "feature request" on the adobe website and/or emailing their corporate office. So I can waste more of my time being a beta tester on this new product. They really should have worked out all of these bugs BEFORE they released the product.
So basically, Adobe Premiere Elements 4 does not do anything that I purchased it to do. If you are looking to quickly and easily upload better quality videos to YouTube, this product is not for you. Stick with what you have. It probably does a better job.
