2007 debut album from the UK songstress Kate Nash. Pop music with indie sensibilities and an experimental edge permeate much of this album, and it is topped off with Nash's distinctive estuary vocal stylings. Since the album's release, Nash has been the talk of the town in the UK, where she regularly appears in most of the music magazines from NME to Q. She has quickly risen the ranks from 'darling…

It's Probably Her Own Fault
I am not sure if the English enjoy a strong English accent as much as we Americans, but I love it: Cockney Rebel, Stratford Mercs...
I give this CD 3 stars because it is a fun piece of music, but musically not much (not saying that's bad).
Still, I don't get these girls today...they have totally departed from how nature intended for a woman to find a good man. Today they look for a "bad boy", they want a man that won't be too strong, so they won't rule them. They pick up men in bars, and then wonder why they drink too much and look at other women.
I could go on, but I say all this becuase these women and their, "I'm upset at men", get kinda old (Alanis, Amy, Kate). I wonder how a CD with a positive message would go over? (probably not good :-))
Still, Kate, you are talented, interesting, and cute as hell. Keep going.

Kate Nash is brilliant
Basically, there really isn't much you should say, other than this album is brilliant. Kate is brilliant. There is a reason that she made my year's top CDs list at #3; this album is fantastic and amazing. If you are a fan of Lily Allen, you will probably love Kate, as the similarities cannot be ignored. However, don't think of her as a knock off, because Kate has spunk and a drive that really propel her into music brilliance.
Also, the song Foundations may be one of the best, catchiest songs to come out in all of 2007.

You Said I Must Eat So Many Lemons `cause I Am So Bitter
Apparently January is the month where England exports all their lasses with attitude problems. Last years saw debut albums from Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen and this year's version is Kate Nash. It is yet to be seen if by the end of 2008 she will be knocked up or in rehab, but unlike her countrymen, she like to tell it like is and in true fiery redhead style. But unlike Winehouse or Allen, Nash actually plays an instrument, the piano to be exact, which makes her sound more Regina Spektor than something produced by Mark Ronson.
Nash does follow the two songstresses' career projectory so far being a huge hit in her native country, going three singles deep, before having even the slightest bit of name recognition in the states. That should all change with the American release of Made of Bricks. This will mostly be thanks to the first single Foundations, an ode to a broken relationship that Nash just can't let go of even though he calls her rude names in a crowded restaurants where she responds that she would rather hook up with his mates.
Unlike her counterparts, Nash actually sings about the brighter side of love on Pumpkin Soup where she repeats to a potential beau that "I just want your kiss boy." The track bounces along thanks to some well placed horns which makes it closest thing to a Ronson produced track on the album. Even though the piano is the main instrument on Made of Bricks, Nash pulls out an acoustic guitar to great effects for the beautifully tender Birds and the heartbreaking Nicest Thing. She goes even more stripped down for (Expletive Deleted)head which is pretty laughable in a good way.
Also different from her predecessors whose albums were full of listenable songs, Nash's debut is a bit uneven as there are a couple of skipable songs, the opening Play is basically unnecessary and (Expletive Deleted) Song just goes one step too far. With that said Nash may not have the clever lyrics of Allen or the soulful voice of Winehouse, but the musicianship could make her a force in the future. Well that is if she can stay out of the tabloids.

Studio only "talent"
I decided to check out this artist (and I use that in only the loosest sense) after seeing her on O'Brien. My respect for an artist/band stems from their ability to perform live, as this is a true measure of their talent. Anyone can sounds amazing in the studio thanks (or perhaps no thanks) to the technology of the day, and I must say that Kate Nash is God awful live. Her piano playing was sub par and I doubt she could carry a tune even if it had handles on it. The only reason I was tortured by her presence on a late talk night show was due to the influences of the power house that is Top 40 radio and the bastion of mediocrity that is MTV.
Do the rest of the planet a favor; delete MTV from your channel line up, skip anything owned by Clear Channel on your dial, and head into a mom and pop music store, pick up a few of the free local rags, and purchase albums by musicians who can actually play their instruments better than a tone deaf monkey.
But, if you must purchase this CD, it would be better served placed under the leg of a wobbly table.

Katemania!
I only discovered who Ms. Nash was after reading a recent NY Times article which mentioned her sold out show there. What a prize she is, and I officially am suffering what I'd call Katemania. If there was any one pop star from the UK that could easily transition as a star in the states, then it is Kate.
She has an excellent writing style with its quirky phrases full of classic UK isms like "tart", and experimental stammering finishes to the lyric. With most UK artists, while they are signing, most of the accent is lost in translation. Not Kate's, hers is bold and shines right through and is definitely one of the things you end up loving about the cd.
There are at least 7 or 8 of what I would call "radio" songs on this record. Not a bad debut! Do yourself a favor and download this gift.
