Fabulous tool for not much money!
Our freezer is old and destroys nearly everything we put in it within a week or two. I decided I needed to invest in a vacuum sealer bag system, but didn't want to spend $100. I was skeptical of the Hand-vac because it was so cheap, and some people seemed to have a really hard time with it - but I gave it a shot. I absolutely love it. When I buy frozen veg or fruit, I immediately dump the bags into one of these freezer bags. I agree that the handi-vac can be a little frustrating to use at first, but even taking a few minutes to get the suction just right, I think it's totally worth it. (I've found that holding a finger under the bag, directly under the suction, seems to do the trick every time.)

total waste of money
I recently purchased this from our local grocery store. Was pleasantly surprised by the price - it was under 6$. I went for this handi vac cos of the ease in availablity of their freezer bags. I am disappointed by the low suction, noisy performance, cheap material taking time to do one tiny packing. And within minutes the bag got all the air & is back to normal size. would not recommend the handi vac or their bags.

It sucked the life outta me
This useless machine did more to suck the life out of me than it did the bags! I did get a couple to seal but after repeated efforts I gave up....Don't waste your money...

Worth Every Penny
I love my Handi-Vac, which I bought at the Jewel for around $10. So far, I've used it four times, and it worked easily and perfectly each time.
Consumer Reports tested this product and recommends it. According to their web site, they tested the Handi-Vac, Food Saver, and freezer bags made by Glad, Ziploc, and Hefty. They put steaks in all of the bags and placed them in a freezer for more than a month. The meat that was sealed in Handi-Vac and Food Saver bags had no freezer burn. Steaks in all of the other freezer bags had some or lots of freezer burn.
I think that most of the people who are having trouble with the Handi-Vac are not following the most important part of the instructions: You have to make sure that the food in the bag touches the textured layer. I noticed that if you hold the bag upright and put the food (such as a small piece of cheese) inside, it may not reach up that far. The best thing to do is follow the detailed pictures in the instructions and lay the bag flat on the counter. Then you can move the food to make sure that part of it touches the textured layer. In addition, as stated in the instructions, after the "ON" button is pressed, it takes several seconds for the bag to begin to tighten around the food. This is normal.
One more thing I like about this product is that it's very easy to open the plastic container. All you have to do is pull the corner tab. You can also store the Handi-Vac in the container and keep it free from dust.

Pretty good
I really like the convenience of this gadget. Sometimes it doesn't start sealing the bag but a few adjustments on how I how hold it usually gets it going. It seals well enough. I use it to thaw out frozen food in a tub of lukewarm water and never have any leaks. Plan to buy the larger bags for bulkier storage. I have 1 gripe with this product and hence 4 stars intstead of 5. It should have the option of using a DC adapter instead of exclusively batteries. Recharging batteries is just an extra step.
