I wrote “The Last Striper” in honor of my father, Louis Lattanzio. He was a man who loved all aspects of fishing salt water (he had no use for freshwater fishing) and surf fishing most of all. He taught my mother to fish during the Depression, and when I came along, I became his fishing buddy at an early age. I learned to dig worms, clams and find shrimp. We seined together. He was a self-taught naturalist and a kid magnet. I can't imagine how many children he taught to fish and crab. Dad always wanted a trophy fish. A whopper. This is a true story, though I've taken some liberties with it. My uncles and cousin were there with him the day he caught his striper. We had talked of this day many times over the years before he died. The event marked him with regret and left him empty of any joy in the catch. Dad loved fishing so much that when we said the final good-byes, we tucked a surf rod and lure in his casket. If the pharoahs went to the afterlife with their favorite foods, pets and servants, by God, Dad could take his fishing rod. So what you're reading is a tribute to my father and his really big fish, which happened to be “The Last Striper” of his life.
