Perfect mate for Samsung LN37A450 37-inch 720p LCD HDTV
Bought at Sam's Club for $68 after receiving my Samsung HDTV from Amazon for $849 (received the TV in perfect condition within one week of placing my order online). DVD player setup with HDMI was virtually automatic as the DVD player synched with the TV when both were powered up. I can use the TV remote to control both devices. Regardless of the DVD input resolution, the DVD player default output to my TV is 1080p, and the TV downconverts the DVD player signal to the TV's 720p default output. The resulting TV display is virtually indistinguishable from "full" 1080p HD. Picture and sound quality are amazing, as is ease of use. The sleek minimalist glossy piano black appearance makes this a perfect match to the TV. I couldn't be happier with this unit, especially in combination with the Samsung HDTV.
The only nit is that neither remote is backlit.
FWIW, I purchased from Amazon the Cables Unlimited Premium 2 Meter Version 1.3 HDMI Home Theater Cable with the TV...made setup a snap.

Disappointed
I purchased this Samsung item as a replacement for a Toshiba DVD player, which finally bit the dust after nearly 10 years of reliable service. I purchased the player from Sam's Club with the idea in mind that I would have upscaling capability when I'm able to afford a true HD LCD set. I am returning it due to very poor interface between the remote and the player; it just does not seem to receive commands properly. Multiple presses of function buttons get either no response or very delayed response. I give the Samsung 2 stars because the picture is of very high quality on my 36" Toshiba CRT; I cannot comment on any upscaling features due to the fact that the TV is not equipped with HDMI or component inputs (it is not HD). Considering the 4 star average review this product received here on Amazon, I am disappointed to say the least.
I have decided to try my luck with a Sony DVP-NS700H, an upscaling DVD player with similar performance features to the Samsung. I have always had good fortune with Sony products, and this model has an S-Video output-something the Samsung lacks.

Loose HDMI connection
When I first hooked this up w/a monster HDMI cable there was no signal. Finally figured out the connection was loose (got it to connect intermittently), and couldn't get it to connect any tighter. Samsung tech support says female connection cannot be at fault, must be the cable. Same cable works fine with my DVR. I have ordered new HDMI cable to see if it fits more snugly than the monster. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hooked it up with a generic hdmi cable, now it works great. lesson learned: don't pay up for monster, especially considering poor connectors.

no improvement seen from the upconverting on this player
This player did not make a big difference to me, it does play dvd's and if you just want a player then I guess this is fine... but as for the upconverting, I really didn't see it.

Fantastic picture quality
This DVD player was thrown in when I purchased my LCD TV from Amazon. The quality of my dvds has never looked better. This player makes them look fantastic upconverted to 1080p. So far I have not found a disc it will not play. Picture quality is fantastic and I got it for free.
Cons: Wish the display was a bit brighter
