Mudcrutch

Average Customer Rating: Recommend

"I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers. I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out." In summer 2007, Tom Petty reunited Mudcrutch, consisting of himself, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, original bandmember Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh, who joined when Mudcrutch first went to Los Angeles in search of a record deal in the early 70s. Mudcrutch-- it's about time!
Disclosure: I first heard Tom Petty play with the Sundowners across the street from UF at the KA house while in Jr. High School. This group included Benmont Tench(child prodigy on keyboard), Richie Hinson, and Dennis Lee. Watched them develop musically with Byrds influence(12 string electric guitar, etc)at venues such as The Place downtown Gville. Epics were the next group I recall and included Tom Leadon (Bernie's younger brother) playing lead with TP on bass. Flash forward to 1976-7: I walk into a record store in Houston and featured front-and-center were multiple copies of TP & Heartbreakers first album with his mug prominently displayed. Unbelievable! Naturally I had to buy it. Have kept up with TP and the guys from afar all these years. Imagine the joy of reading about the Mudcrutch reunion project after all this time! Got the album right away and have been listening frequently since. Needless to say, I believe TP and the guys have done it again! This guy has the knack. More Southern/countrified than I recall, but a very enjoyable listen and an insight to the roots of this gem of an artist. Mrs. Murphree would be proud! Now if we could just get Mudcrutch to play our HS reunion in June!

It's still Tom Petty and Mike Campbell!
I like all of Tom's stuff mostly because it is eclectic. This is my favorite since Wildflowers. Just has those catchy middle America lyrics that the common man relates to. A little country, a little blues, a little folk - but still rock and roll. Buy it, you'll like it.
