Average Software in an Average Security Software Market
While I did not expect much with McAfee Internet Security 2009 it did, at least, meet my expectations. As someone that works in the computing industry I know how the consumer level anti-virus packages can be below par and really cause headaches for the end user. Corporate level packages are much better, but I will get off topic here...
McAfee Internet Security 2009 was decently quick during the installation and updating phases. It followed the usual steps of uninstalling older software packages and did it with ease, but I'm sure it was just luck in my case. After the install and updating, I found the menus to be fairly easy to navigate. However, I personally feel that most anti-virus/internet security packages (McAfee included) offer too many options. At the end of the day most people just want to know that their PC is protected. McAfee does a decent job of offering a compromise between simple, straight-forward menus and more complicated options should the user want them.
After a couple weeks of use, Internet Security 2009 has been running smoothly. I have not noticed too much of a slow down on my system and the software has not been too nagging with pop-ups and warnings. As for firewalls, it does a good job out of the box without too much hassle and blocking.
Overall, its speed has been above par and resource usage has been relatively low. Comparing Internet Security 2009 to previous versions, I would certainly recommend it as an upgrade. Compared to its competition, it's really on par. It does not offer anything substantial above its competitors, nor does it offer any negatives. Your previous experience with this brand and the price of the product should be among your deciding factors. I have used just about all of the consumer level security packages and I tend to stick with a single brand and McAfee is certainly a brand that you can trust.

Excellent products across the board
Back when we owned only one computer, McAfee was the internet utility software we used. After my husband became a certified system engineer and our home network grew to rival that of some small companies, McAfee remained the brand we counted on. We still do. This is an excellent suite and a great value for money. In a word -- well, two words -- buy it.

Great Product
You can't go wrong with McAfee! Easy to install, this security system will do the job without slowing your computer down to a crawl like some of the others I've tried. Not comprehensive, but focused instead on those who do a lot of internet surfing.

Pick Your Poison
If you're like me, you've spent much time with these consumer-level security software over the past few years. Chances are that your experiences were not entirely positive. While offering some clear value to us, they normally come preloaded on computers and bombard you with notifications and updates, while draining valuable system resources (I HATE THAT don't you?). As such, these programs have gotten a reputation for being bloated and inefficient, while free antivirus offerings, like AVG and Avast, have proven themselves to be worthy alternatives, at least for core features.
Strengths: Good at scanning for viruses and malware. Tons of features, easy to use. Report and monitor internet attempts/ Hits on your PC. Pretty bells sounds and graphs.
Weaknesses: Terrible load times and slow to respond. Kept crashing after roughly 9 months of use - customer service was terrible. Can bog down system though not as bad as Norton Internet security suite. Nightmare to update, renew, and if something goes wrong, another nightmare to uninstall. Poor Tech support.
Overall Evaluation: If you can get it to load, and get it to respond (even on a fairly quick computer it took forever), then it's a decent protection package. However, if you really don't know a lot about protection programs or have a very short temper when it comes to computers, I suggest staying away - this package causes headaches and so does customer support. As owner of my equipment I agree to abide by software protocols. McAfee is different. Once their software GRABS your PC. You cannot escape. Sooner you will delete essential files than remove McAfee from registry. The software written not to be deleted. Scare?? yup.. I've experienced this FIRST hand. McAfee has "parasite" my unit so I had to rebuild. Mcafee has unveiled an improved UI, which makes the software easier to use. It seems effective in protecting my machines from harm, but couldn't it do it without bogging down my computers so much?

McAfee Internet Security 2009 Runs Smooth
I have purchased this antivirus/security software because of the high ranking from Consumers Report and positive feedback from sites such as CNET. I found this software easy to install without any problems. I have installed this software for three weeks and have been quite satisfied. Compared to such anti virus packages such as Trend Micro and Nortons, it does not significantly slow down my computer at start-up nor does it send questionable messages about what it did for my security. I also found the price reasonable (purchased for $39 at Amazon for 3 PCs).
I have a window VISTA Home Premium system with 2G ram and 160G hard drive. On installing I followed the instructions by first uninstalling all previous anti virus software and closing all other applications. Installation took approximately 7 minutes and ran smoothly.
Highly recommended!
