- Product poorly supported, not-working right from the box
- I bought mine to use as a portable 9-volt power source. Tried to charge it fresh from the box but got a wonderful, shrill beeping sound. The help line is only open 8-5 EST and so it was a few weeks before I could call customer service. First call the representative told me that this was a feature and was supposed to beep continuously through the charging cycle.
I tried another call. This time the rep told me to cycle the power several times and this should resolve the issue. It didn't. I was referrred to a service center some 150 miles from my home, but discovered online that there is a service center within 5 miles... whew!
Not happy with this purchase, nor with service after the sale. - 2007-07-23, 5 of 6 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Black & Decker Simple Start
- I haven't needed to use this product but feel secure knowing it is in the trunk of my car in case my battery fails. Great product from a good company.

- Nice quality, but odd size.
- We bought two, one for each car, but it doesn't fit in either glove box (Ugh). This means you have to find a secure place in your trunk to hold it. It's pretty heavy and could be a potential projectile if in an accident.
I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it's piece of mind knowing it's in the car (especially in my wife's car). The flashlight on the unit was helpful during a power outage the other day. I'm glad I bought it, and hope it works when we need it! :) - 2007-07-05, 2 of 3 people found this review helpful, Rated:
- Great thing to keep in your trunk!
- I bought this for my dad's birthday. I honestly thought it was a gimmick, but he really wanted it. Well, I got stuck with a dead battery and no jumper cables. He showed up with this tiny little device that he keeps in his trunk. I was up and running in 10 minutes!!! I came straight home and bought one for each of my cars!

- Didn't really work for me.
- I've tried this in three different cars now and none of them were recharged with this unit. Each time the unit complained about one thing or another. It's rather finicky. I should have known that the smaller form factor ones really are not worth it in the long run.
Is it really for convenience? I don't know about you, but I really don't want to be sitting around waiting 30 minutes while I wait for this thing to hopefully charge my stuff (again, 0/3 batting average) I'd rather have the full sized deals that have alligator clips so I can connect right to my battery and be done in <30 seconds. Gimme a break. Are we all so delicate that we really need to sit in our car and plug a gizmo in, HOPE it works and 30 minutes later find out?
The other reviewers are all lazy in my opinion. Get the bigger devices, stuff it in your trunk and move on. I'll take 30 seconds of charging in the pouring rain over 30 minutes waiting for this thing to work...
Since I don't carry this in my car now, let me tell you how I use it. I have a cool battery powered lawn mower that requires a full time trickle charge. A little modification to the cable on the Simple Start and I've got my lawnmower always charged! At least it didn't go to waste.
I didn't give this a 1 star because Black and Decker makes good stuff and I know this must work for some because of the prior reviews, but again... L A Z Y! - 2007-06-17, 5 of 13 people found this review helpful, Rated:
